MiniArt Have supplied us with an excellent little kit from their buildings and diorama series this week. The 1/35 "Metal Telegraph Pole" This is a small box with six sprues inside with fourty two pieces of grey styrene. Represented is two metal telegraph poles, which can be constructed in a few different configurations. These metal telegraph poles like this are extremely common in central Europe and I have seen them on my trip there this year and thought at the time "wow those are neat" and I actually thought about them as a diorama subject – Now MiniArt have made one for us! No cutting styrene strips, no trying to scratch build the connecters/ insulators on the poles – hooray!!

As I said four sprues, of which two are the "furniture" of the metal pole – the brackets and insulators and the hanging light and bracket which can be attached in many different ways to customise your poles. The Pole itself is a pretty straight forward 2x2 sprues to make the two poles. All in all you can have completely two different poles or two the same. The modular design of these as well enable you to make a higher pole for a ravine or some such – my brain is filling with possibilities.

Instructions are simple – they are on the back of the box , and the straight forward way of construction really means you don’t need them anyway – they are there however if you need them. Colour wise I have seen these poles in real life in natural grey/rusted metal, or coloured green and some at a railway station once in Hungary in chevrons so they are quite a good thing to chose the colours yourself.

The only real things you must addres are a little sanding to get rid of these

injection marks- otherwise - Perfect!

Now from the outset there are a few injection marks on the flat plates that MUST be removed before you join them together otherwise you will have a wonky pole (we don’t want that do we!) It takes a minute or so  to sand off so no real big deal. there is some flash to be cleaned up around the coolie lights - an easy fix as its thin - just take your time. The other thing is that there are some sink marks on the inside of the frames, again this is no deal at all as you cannot see them inside the structure – so the two imperfections I can see really don’t matter.

There are some other good points – The "coolie" light that hangs off the telegraph pole can hang at any angle as seen in the pictures so you can simulate that this is damage and hanging at an angle.

The other thing is just the ease of construction. It took me about an hour to quite quickly and roughly I may add – cut , sand and glue these two poles in two different mock-ups – I think if you were to finish it normally it would take probably about 3 hours to get it painted and completed, which beats the hell out of the time that it would take to TRY and make it with styrene strip. So thanks MiniArt for making this set – I expect to see min on a railway diorama hopefully when I get a chance to model very soon!

So what do we think?

If you need a central Europe setting in an industrial or railway setting these will give your diorama a different dimension in height. Easy to construct and no doubt easy to finish and best of all not expensive! It ticks all the boxes for me.

Again well done MiniArt
