This is a product aimed at the dioramaistes (is there such a word?) amongst you. This is a new product to me, and when it dropped onto my doormat, I initially wondered what possible use I could make of it.
However, the statement on the package says, “Building on your imagination” - and it was then I thought back to those superb armour dioramas at this year’s Euromilitaire Show that I began to realise the potential of this pliable ‘rubbery’ material – scale workshops, hangars, street scenes – imagination is a wonderful thing.
The material itself is called, ‘Reddiprene38’, it is black (well the two sample sets I had were) and it can be easily curved, pressed, cut, carved, glued and painted. For curving and pressing all you need is a domestic hair dryer and apply the heat about 50mm from the material which then becomes pliable and can be shaped to your requirements. If it doesn’t satisfy your requirements, then just re-heat and try again, it is that simple.
Cutting is by the good old modelling knife and to glue things together, the recommended adhesive is cyanoacrylate – superglue.
According to the manufacturers, most types of paint can be used, water or spirit based but I would recommend a primer first.
The two sample sets I had for review were:
- MSS901 – Modelling Shapes Bundle Pack, and
- MSS909 - Plain Modelling Sheets Bundle Pack
MSS 901 contains 12 strips 40mm x 200mm with a total of 388 lengths of 16 different sized shapes! You certainly get a lot of Reddiprene38 for your money! The shapes range through U, Flat, Hexagon, Square, Round, Right Angle, Z and T – quite an assortment to set your grey cells working. I was particularly taken with the small round shaped strips and I began to think of applications on 1/32 model aircraft such as wheel well and cockpit ‘plumbing’ for instance. It would be so easy to get it into the right shape you require.

MSS909 contains four plain sheets 200mm x 120mm. Two sheets are 0.6mm and the other two sheets are 2.00mm and 3.00mm respectively. With the thinner sheets, I am already thinking of opened hatches on aircraft plus a myriad of uses on armour, especially with the smaller and larger sized round strips in the MSS901 pack.

I have checked out their website, www.modelscenery.com and have noted they also produce slate roof packs, fortress stone walls, Yorkshire stone floors, field walls and a Mediaeval detail set. Dioramaistes – the World is your Oyster!
So what do we think?
This is really good stuff and at UK£7.20 for the MSS901 set and UK£5.20 for the MSS909 set, I think they are represent good value for money and well worth trying for your next club night diorama. Isn’t there a song called, “Imagine”?
Overall: 9/10
