Although Scale Plastic & Rail have reviewed the MDC SC1000 ‘Hermann’ Bomb before, this release from MDC is a little different. Now available with a skid ‘cart’ this new set comprises of 14 resin parts, one photo-etch fret and four brass pins, and comes with a simple set of instructions.

As seen in some wartime photos, the usual bomb-cart is replaced by a crude sled, and this is what MDC have beautifully created here. The bomb itself has its body cast as a single part with full strap detail etc, and has four very fine slots in the rear, to accept the photo-etch tail fins. These slots are clear, and I would test fit the edge of the fret into these to ensure that you won’t damage the main parts if they need to be cleaned. If they do, a simple stroke with a razor saw will sort it.

The photo etch fret contains the four fins and the tail cone and stencils. Etch quality is superb, and the fret is supplied within its own zip bag, and secured to a cardboard stiffener to minimise risk of damage.

The skids themselves are beautifully created, with full timber grain detail and the metal plate skid surface looking great. The ‘hewn’ look of the recesses is really very good, as are the bolt positions. A small casting lug at the tip of the skid will need to be removed, but this is quite minimal.

Another bag of resin parts includes the skid cross members, resin nuts and brass pins. Again, casting is very good, with minimal pouring spout connections to be removed, and where these is flash, it is so very thin that it will more or less brush off.

Instructions are supplied on a simple, single-sided sheet of paper with a picture of the finished sled and bomb ensemble. There is nothing here which will tax at all, and most of the work will actually be taken up with the paintwork. A corking little set!

So what do we think?
Assembly of this model is very simple, yet will look great alongside a Ju 87 or Ju 88 as they are being ‘bombed up’. My only complaint is that the instructions sheet which adorned the original SC1000 bomb isn’t supplied in this kit, as it will provide a few helpful pointers in construction.

Overall: 9/10
